add a "Today" button on the screen
Currently there is a "Today" button in the menu. Please vote for this idea if you would like to have a today button on the screen that is always visible. Write a comment where you would like it to be placed.
There are currently two options to have a “Today” button on the screen:
1. You can turn “Settings > Display and Use > General > Show toolbar” on.
2. You can turn “Settings > Display and Use > General > Tapping a tab again jumps to current day” on. Then you can tap the active tab (e.g. “Day”) to jump to the current day.

I think the Galaxy Note 3 doesn't have a separate search button, newer Android versions do not have this button any more. But CalenGoo will support the "action bar" at the top of the screen soon and then a today button can be displayed in that bar.

Yes, the more buttons that do not require a trip to the Menu button, the better.

How about using gestures to do the job? Downwards for today in Day view, and upwards for today in current view.

Tested the "search" button on Galaxy S2 (which is basically a long hold of the menu button) to get to Today, but nothing happened.

How about adding it to the tabs to be some what similar Google calendar on the web?

In the current version it is possible to assign the "Today" function to the "back" or "search" hardware buttons of your Android device. You can find this function under "Settings", "Display and Use", "General", "Back button" and "Search button". This may be even more useful because it does not need space on the screen.
