add an option to run the app without a background service
However without a background service you cannot use any widgets, it cannot automatically sync calendars or tasks directly with Google and it cannot display any reminders.

Agree to a point. I think the default Calendar already has some mechanism to fire reminders, and the calendars are the same? They are synced by the integrated calendar app, I suppose?
In that case, most of the time I'd also have no need for the features that would be missing. However, manipulating an event from another app's notification might be an issue. Worth trying, though. -

I do not need sync and reminders (Android do them) . I need only a good calendar app instead of the stock Android calendar.
